Binder Carpio

Binder Carpio Wounaan Artisan

Binder Carpio was born in the province of Darién, Panama and is a part of the Wounaan ethnic group. He was named Binder after an American missionary to Panama who was important to his family. He completed his primary and secondary studies in the province of Colón, Panama. He received his degree in eco-tourism from the University of Colon. He is unmarried. He inherited the art of carving cocobolo wood and tagua seeds from his father and grandfathers. The designs he creates are inspired by the natural world of his home in the jungle. Nowadays, he dedicates himself to the carving of cocobolo wood and tagua seeds. He also works as a volunteer in the Embera community and takes an active role in the management of the Carpio Arte family cooperative.
